"The flax bush is
woven into the fabric of human history in New Zealand.
No fibre plant was more important to Maori than flax.
Each pa or marae typically had a pa harakeke or flax plantation.
Harakeke or Phormium tenax
(being one of many types of flax) grows in vigorous wild bushes almost anywhere
around the country.
My walks on windy cliffs above the black sands on Auckland's west coast are
coloured by the groves
of huge broad leaves swaying and dancing to the whistling wind.
I have tried to distil a sense of the abundance and energy of the native flora, with it's endless variation of texture.
The Flax Square tumbled
across a wall reflects the pattern of the weave of the handmade flax object.
The repetition of form begins to reflect the abundance and energy of the New
Zealand flora.
The twisting wave like movement of the giant kelp and the foaming swirl of
sea and cloud."
